Being a Gluten Free Athlete

Gluten free, gluten friendly, gluten intolerant – we hear a lot about gluten these days. I’ve been avoiding gluten due to a celiac diagnosis for almost 20 years now, long before product labels helped me determine if an item contained gluten.

I’m thankful to say that these issues are gone now and that there are even places that are completely dedicated to serving gluten free goods! At home, I know exactly where to go to find delicious gluten free goodies, but on the road, it can be a guess as to what places even offer gluten free treats.

While we were on the road last month, I was lucky enough to learn about Voila Gluten Free Bakeree in Kanata, Ontario. I love finding bakeries that only make gluten free goodies because it saves me a lot of extra worry about the little bits of gluten that can otherwise get into my food and make me really sick.

Voila Gluten Free Bakeree is a little different than most places I find, in that they have a wide range of savory items in addition to the desserts and sweets I traditionally associate with a bakery. I wish I lived closer so that I could test out all their pastas and breads! But the rare times I find places like this, especially on the road, I’m a sucker for the sweets. My teammates might not even know it, but man do I love a good muffin or cupcake.

Maybe I’ll be lucky enough to find more gluten free bakeries on my travels this season, but if we end up back in the Ottawa area, a stop at Voila Gluten Free Bakeree is definitely on my to-do list.
